While you and your team may be returning from summer breaks, cybercriminals are relentlessly active. Studies from ProofPoint and Check Point reveal a surge in phishing attacks during summer months. Here's how to stay vigilant and protect your business.
Why Are Phishing Risks Higher in Summer?
Cyber attackers exploit summer travel trends by masquerading as trusted hotel and Airbnb sites, reports Check Point Research. They identified a 55% jump in new travel-related domains registered in May 2025 compared to the previous year. Out of over 39,000 domains, approximately 1 in 21 were flagged as malicious or suspicious.
Additionally, late summer coincides with back-to-school season, triggering more phishing emails posing as university communications targeting students and staff. Even if your business isn't directly impacted, employees may check personal emails on work devices, providing cybercriminals a dangerous foothold with a single click.
How To Strengthen Your Defenses
While AI enhances cybersecurity tools, it also empowers attackers to craft convincing phishing scams. Training yourself and your team to recognize red flags is critical to avoid falling prey.
Follow these key safety guidelines:
· Scrutinize suspicious emails. Beyond spotting typos, verify sender addresses and hover over links to check their legitimacy as AI-generated texts can appear flawless.
· Verify URLs carefully. Watch for misspelled domains or uncommon extensions like .today or .info often linked to scams.
· Access websites directly. Instead of clicking links in emails, type the website address yourself to avoid fraudulent sites.
· Enable Multifactor Authentication (MFA). MFA adds an essential layer of protection, securing your login credentials even if a breach occurs.
· Use VPNs on public WiFi. When accessing sensitive information in public networks, a VPN provides crucial encryption.
· Keep personal emails off work devices. Avoid mixing personal and business accounts to reduce security risks.
· Consult your MSP about endpoint security. Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) tools monitor devices for threats, block phishing attempts, and alert your MSP instantly to minimize damage.
Phishing threats evolve daily, accelerated by AI advancements. Empowering your team with knowledge is the strongest defense. Stay informed, stay protected.
